Staff Spotlight: Edith Emmanuella Umwiza
Please introduce yourself.
My name is Edith Emmanuella Umwiza, I am an Agriculture Associate at GHI. I lead the farm’s daily activities and supervise and coordinate the farm activities. I hold a BSc in Crop Production from the University of Rwanda. I have experience in proper land use, farming practices, crop and livestock science, and environmental management. My target is to leave the world better than I found it and I believe I am in the right place.
How long have you been here and what inspired you to join the team at Gardens for Health International?
I joined GHI in July, last year, interning with the Agriculture Department. I was greatly inspired by the work and impact GHI’s work has on the community.
Prior to joining GHI, I had worked with PND, an organization that works in Conservation Agriculture and their work has many similarities with our agriculture model. It inspired me to continue the work at GHI and it helps having 5 acres to explore in permanent culture.
What do you do and what most inspires you about your work?
I lead, coordinate, and supervise the farm’s everyday activities. I get to interact with farm technicians, casual laborers, and the community in a manner I find fulfilling. As such, I am inspired by the team collaboration and the opportunity to learn from each other.
What challenges have you faced so far?
I think recently, the delay of rain also delayed all our planned activities. As the climate changes, we also face increased pests that require us to continuously innovate.
What do you think is the most important skill you’ve had to develop over time?
I have attended training events that have helped me with my public speaking skills. The technical aspect of my work also has motivated me to keep learning and researching all things farming. From this experience, I believe the farm will help me in guiding my future career path in my interests of permaculture and helping communities with climate-smart strategies against climatic shocks.
Let's look through your eyes. Where do you see GHI in 5 Years?
I see GHI growing to serve and impact many more lives and communities. I see a learning campus that accommodates many more guests and donors than we already host.
Do you have a favorite memory of your time at GHI?
Do you have a favorite spot at the farm?
The dryer sheet. It is beautiful, surrounded by trees, and always has a nice breeze.
Anything we forgot you’d like to share with us?
I think it’s worth mentioning that the team at GHI is friendly and welcoming to everyone. The work culture exceeded my expectations.
