“Turikumwe helped me so much and I am thankful for that”

Nyirandwaniye Beatrice joined GHI’s Health Center Program in January 2016, after her son Thiery was diagnosed with malnutrition during community growth campaigns. fter enrolling in the program, GHI’s Turi Kumwe team noticed just how small Thiery was.
“I was at home when people came to take length measurements of my child. One of the Turikumwe members asked me, ‘Why don’t you take your child to the hospital for treatment?’”, Beatrice explained. “[When] I told him I had no money, he told me he would find a way to help me take my child to the hospital.”
Turi Kumwe, a GHI staff-supported fund, offers financial support to our most economically vulnerable partner families. The fund identifies families struggling with severe and urgent threats to their health and wellbeing and leverages the staff’s own resources to provide temporary, emergency support. This could include finances for unanticipated medical costs, help in securing stable housing, advocacy to receive medical insurance, or support with other time-sensitive challenges.
Thiery was suffering from severe sinusitis and wasn’t able to eat because the infection had created so much swelling in his throat. Beatrice had already taken him to a hospital in Ruhengeri, the district capital, where she was told to purchase a medicine from a local pharmacy that did nothing for Thiery’s condition. Once the problem was diagnosed, the Turi Kumwe team saw that Thiery was transferred to a hospital in Kigali for surgery. Weighing only six kilograms when he entered the hospital, Thiery now weighs eleven kilograms, something Beatrice attributes to GHI’s support.
“My child was treated and I practice what I learned from GHI trainings,” Beatrice said. “I give him nutritious food and he has gained weight. He is growing well and is healthy and he is learning how to talk. He was not happy before but now he is happy.”
